Literature

E. Negro, in Carracci e dintorni. Trenta quadri per un'esposizione, exhibition catalogue edited by A. Cottino, E. Negro, M. Pirondini, N. Roio - Turin, Palazzo del Lavoro (16-24 March 1996), Turin 1996, pp. 23-24;
A. Brogi, Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619), catalogue raisonné edited by M. Naldi and M. Riccòmini, Pittori d'Italia, no. 3, vol. II, Ozzano Emilia 2001, I, pp. 203-204, n. 91, II, fig. 193;

A. Brogi, in Antichi Maestri Emiliani, edited by M. Savelli, Bologna 2015, pp. 24-31.

Alessandro Brogi relates the painting to other two works on copper of the same subject and size formerly in the Bolognese antique market and London Matthiesen Gallery (A. Brogi, 2001, I, pp. 202 -204, no. 90-92, II, figs. 192-194). Initially dated to the second half of the 17th century's first decade, in an extensive study dedicated to the painting (June 2022) the expert anticipates their execution to c. 1600.
