Inedito / UnpublishedThis fascinating and previously unpublished portrait can be traced back to the late activity of Nicolas Régnier, a Flemish painter active in Venice during the first half of the 17th century. The pictorial quality, ceremonial attire, and solemn pose point to an important public commission. The figure, dressed in a golden robe lined in red and accompanied by symbolic objects such as a basin and a decorated book, is most likely a Procurator of St. Mark, one of the highest offices in the Venetian Republic. The composition and iconographic elements correspond closely with other official portraits painted by Régnier for Venetian institutions. The outstretched hand in an oratorical gesture, the drapery in the background, and the precious details enhance the ceremonial tone of the scene. The work fits fully within the tradition of Venetian state portraiture, to which Régnier made a significant contribution in the final years of his career.
