Together again ... forever this time

We are thrilled to announce this remarkable new acquisition by the Szépművészeti Múzeum in Budapest, and to know that, after more than 100 years, the Angel and the Virgin of the Annunciation by Marrina ( alias Lorenzo di Mariano, 1476-1534) are reunited once again ... and this time forever!
Separated at an unknown date from their place of origin-perhaps the monastery of San Girolamo in Campansi-the Angel of the Annunciation was acquired by the Budapest Museum in 1895 from the dealer Emilio Costantini of Florence . After a long pilgrimage to foreign private collections, among others the prestigious collection of the Dutchman Otto Lanz, in 2017, the Virgin was acquired by our gallery. Undergoing a delicate restoration in order to bring it back to its original state, the work was presented at the 2020 edition of TEFAF-Maastricht.
The Virgin, little larger than life-size, with her mantle strewn with eight-pointed stars still bearing traces of original gilding and coloring, is certainly one of our most compelling discoveries. Variously attributed to Agostino di Duccio and Matteo Civitali, the link to its pendant in Budapest and to the name of its author has faded over time, until almost being erased. It is thanks to the researches and studies of Gabriele Fattorini, Giancarlo Gentilini and Lorenzo Principi if the work has been correctly traced back to the genius of the Sienese sculptor and related again to the beautiful Angel.
Thanks to the collaboration with the curators of the Budapest Museum, and in particular Dr. Miriam Szőcs, this story had its happy ending.
The fascination of our work also lies in this.
