The Great Beauty: Seven Centuries of Italian Art

A major exhibition,

a prestigious aristocratic palace,

are the setting for the opening in Milan

of our third gallery.

On show a fine selection of Italian Masterpieces from the 14th to the 20th century

including a work by Hayez which has long not been on public view.

We will celebrate this moment by inaugurating the exhibition The Great Beauty. Seven centuries of Italian art, on display from 8 October to 18 December. A selection of masterpieces celebrating the greatness of Italian art, from the 14th century to the late 20th century. The exhibition opens with a gold background by the Sienese artist Niccolò di Segna, part of the polyptych now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Siena, where the style of Duccio da Boninsegna dialogues with that of Simone Martini. Of particular interest in the exhibition is the Imelda de' Lambertazzi, a precious painting by Francesco Hayez, an undisputed protagonist in Milan of Italian Romanticism season. The work, exhibited in Brera in 1853, recalls a moment in the story of Imelda and Bonifacio and their love, which is hindered by the Lambertazzi and Gieremei families. Hayez took the story from Gabriele Speduti's tragedy of 1825 and from the melodrama set to music five years later by Gaetano Donizzetti. He reworked it in this canvas with the extraordinary mastery of form and colour that distinguishes his work. The exhibition is enriched by other masterpieces by great artists like Giovanni Boldini, Felice Casorati, Guercino, Arnaldo Pomodoro and Giovanni Battista Salvi, il Sassoferrato.
